Outdoor ethernet surge protector for protecting ethernet networks from electrical surges.

Overview

This weather resistant surge protector is installed inline on an ethernet cable (RJ45 CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6) to prevent damage from electrical surge due to lightning strikes, EMF induced surges, voltage spikes, or POE overvoltages. The surge protection device (SPD) is designed for outdoor use with an IP44 rating.

The primary surge protection comes from four gas discharge tubes suitable for high and/or low frequency surges, dissipating the voltage transient by containing excess voltage in a plasma gas and releasing it safely. Protection is multidirectional and works with Gigabit 10/100/1000, POE (802.3af), and POE+ (802.3at) networks without affecting network speed.

Installation

The mounting holes make installation easy to either a wall, pole, network panel, cabinet, or rack. A rubberized cable gland helps protect wires.

The surge protector must be grounded to work. An ethernet ground wire (12 AWG) must be connected to ground through the shortest path. When used with the X-422 Davis Suite Controller on a Davis Integrated Sensor Suite, mount the surge protector as close as possible to the X-422 board. If your weather station is properly grounded, it will provide a nearby ground connection.
